FDA action increases the prospect for bringing hepatitis B screening one step closer to those who lack access to care

A potentially significant public health tool, POC testing has been used in Europe and Asia for years.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently posted a proposed rule, “Microbiology Devices; Reclassification of Antigen, Antibody, and Nucleic Acid-Based Hepatitis B Virus Assay Devices,” down-classifying hepatitis B screening and diagnostic tests from class III to class II. This increases the likelihood that point-of-care (POC) testing for hepatitis B in the U.S. will be made available, which is instrumental to improving access to testing for the disease. Hepatitis B Foundation to hold community event to celebrate new book by a co-founder

WHO announces new guidelines for treatment of hepatitis B

A webinar about the guidelines co-hosted by the WHO and Hepatitis B Foundation is set for April 17.

The Hepatitis B Foundation is pleased to share the news that the World Health Organization (WHO) has released new “Guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis, care and treatment for people with chronic hepatitis B infection.” The new guidelines were released today (March 29) at the annual meeting of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) in Kyoto, Japan. People living with hepatitis B should have a voice in new treatment guidelines, advocates say

A widely read medical journal, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, published a commentary on Jan. 22 from a team of physicians and public health experts who strongly advocate for patients’ voices to be heard in developing new guidelines for people living with hepatitis B. A webinar for health care providers and public health professionals on the need for the lived experience to be included in guideline development and incorporating the patients’ voice is set for Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. EST. Please read more here.

Hepatitis B Foundation presents globally recognized expert on liver disease with 2024 Baruch S. Blumberg Prize

At its April 5 Gala, the Hepatitis B Foundation presented T. Jake Liang, MD, a Distinguished Investigator at the National Institutes of Health and globally recognized expert on liver diseases, with the 2024 Baruch S. Blumberg Prize. “The community owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to Dr. Liang for his decades of contributions to the basic science advances and clinical care of those with chronic hepatitis B,” Hepatitis B Foundation President Chari A. Hepatitis B Foundation launches training website with user-friendly courses for everyone interested in hepatitis B and D 

The Hepatitis B Foundation and partners are launching a cost-free training website, the “B Informed Training Hub,” for people who want to learn more about hepatitis B and hepatitis D. The online tool was developed by the Hepatitis B Foundation, working in collaboration with HepBCommunity and the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. Please read more here

With the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) release last week of new guidance for hepatitis B screening, adding to updated recommendations on vaccination that the CDC put out last spring, the Hepatitis B Foundation has produced a white paper with guidance on how health care providers in the U.S. can begin implementing these new universal hepatitis B screening and vaccination (for adults ages 19-59) guidelines. The Johnson & Johnson subsidiary is ending efforts produce a treatment for hepatitis B, a life-threatening infection that impacts 300 million people worldwide. Hepatitis B Foundation President Chari A. The Hepatitis B Foundation applauds the decision of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps to accept future applicants living with chronic hepatitis B infection and HIV. The USPHS Commissioned Corps announced the change yesterday (Dec. 1), which was World AIDS Day. Previously, HIV and hepatitis B infection were both considered disqualifying medical conditions.
